- Knowing and Connecting (to your body and inner self)
- Modifications & Props
- Bringing the Practice Home
Curvy Yoga was created to hold a safe and accessible place for curvy-bodied people to experience yoga. While not everyone will instantly (or ever, in some cases) love yoga, the intention is to make it an option for people who never thought it was. Over time, it has evolved into also being a body affirming space for people of all shapes and sizes to practice yoga with lots of options for individual expressions of poses.
During this workshop you will learn how to connect and know yourself in an affirming way (inside and out!) with simple, easy to remember mindful practices that you can take with you wherever you are, whether its at home, the office or even traveling. You’ll also learn modifications, such as widening your stance, and using props to allow space for moving through the poses with lots of accessibility, helping you to find the balance between ease and effort. Finally, we’ll discuss and explore options to bring your practice home, using the wall, chairs and other “at home” props to allow you to make yoga a part of your daily life.
The class instructor, Toni, began practicing yoga while in her 20s. While it started out as mostly physical, she soon realized that a regular yoga practice gave her a much more connected feeling to herself, and the world around her. In 2004, she deepened her connection by taking a 200YTT course at Yoga on Main in Manayunk, hoping to share her love of yoga with others. Through the years she realized, as a person with a bigger body, that modifications and props were often needed to make poses more accessible. So in 2012, she studied with Anna Guest-Jelley and became a certified Curvy Yoga Teacher, knowing this would give her the knowledge she needed to offer yoga to others who thought it might never be accessible to them.
